In recent weeks, Russia has notably changed its approach to attacking Ukraine's capital, Kyiv. While large-scale strikes previously took place mainly at night, attacks are now continuing almost around the clock, day and night alike.

New drone type causes problems

Of particular concern are Russia's jet-powered drones, which can fly at speeds approaching those of commercial passenger aircraft. Such speed makes detection and interception significantly more difficult, placing added strain on Kyiv's air defense systems, which are already operating under heavy load.

Goal: near-constant alerts

By launching successive waves of drones, Moscow appears to be aiming to keep Kyiv's residents and the city's defense systems in a state of almost continuous air raid alert. This tactic forces the capital's population and services to maintain heightened vigilance for far longer stretches than before, when attacks were concentrated mainly during nighttime hours.

Air defense systems, already under significant strain, now must contend with more frequent and less predictable waves of attacks spread across the entire day.
