Russia to scrap border zones separating it from occupied Ukrainian territories

Russia is preparing to eliminate special border zones that currently separate its territory from occupied parts of Ukraine, further integrating those areas into its legal and administrative system.

Russia intends to remove the special border zones that currently mark the boundary between its own territory and the parts of Ukraine it occupies.

The move would represent a further step in integrating the occupied Ukrainian territories into Russia's legal and administrative framework, reducing the formal distinction between Russian territory proper and the areas under its control in Ukraine.

Eliminating these border zones fits into a broader pattern of Russia consolidating its administrative grip on the occupied regions, treating them increasingly as an extension of the rest of the country rather than as separately managed zones.
