Russia continues strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure as Zelenskyy awaits US talks
Russia carried out fresh overnight strikes on Ukraine's energy facilities, killing one person and injuring at least five in the Odesa region. President Zelenskyy said he is preparing for further talks with US negotiators, with a visit to Kyiv tentatively scheduled in the coming weeks.
Russia has continued its campaign against Ukraine's energy infrastructure, striking several facilities overnight in an ongoing effort to disable the country's power grid before winter sets in.
Oleh Kiper, governor of the Odesa region, reported that one person was killed and at least five injured in the latest attack.
Strikes also hit Kyiv
In recent days, strikes have continued to hit the capital, Kyiv, with Russia now adding daytime attacks to its usual night-time bombardments in an apparent effort to disrupt daily life in the city. In one such strike, a drone hit a nine-storey residential building in Kyiv, where rescuers were seen working at the scene.
Zelenskyy prepares for further US talks
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he is preparing to hold further talks with US negotiators in the coming weeks. Tentative dates have also been set for a long-anticipated visit by US representatives to Kyiv.

Separately, Germany is bracing for a state election in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, which could see the far-right Alternative für Deutschland enter power in the state for the first time since the second world war.
