Russia launches 172-drone attack on Ukraine, air defence intercepts 148
Overnight on 20-21 September, Russia launched 172 drones at Ukraine, with air defence forces destroying or jamming 148 of them. Impacts were recorded in 14 locations.
Russian forces carried out a large-scale overnight attack on Ukraine on 20-21 September, launching 172 drones of various types, according to Ukraine's Air Force.
The assault involved Shahed-type attack drones — 64 of them jet-powered — along with Gerbera drones, Parodiya decoy UAVs and Banderol/Dan-T drone missiles. The launches began at 18:00 local time on 20 September.
The drones were launched from several Russian cities, including Belgorod, Shatalovo, Oryol, Kursk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk and Millerovo, as well as from temporarily occupied Donetsk and Hvardiiske in Crimea.
Response
Ukraine's defence forces used aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare assets, unmanned systems units and mobile fire groups to repel the attack.
By 08:00, Ukrainian air defence had destroyed or jammed 147 Shahed, Gerbera and other drones, plus one Banderol/Dan-T drone missile — a total of 148 out of the 172 aerial assets launched.
Ukraine's Air Force reported that hits from aerial assets were recorded at 14 locations, while debris from downed drones fell in four additional locations.
