Russia may soon have more tanks than pre-war. It just can’t use them.

Russia is reviving previously unrecoverable Soviet tank engines to boost its fleet, but the persistent drone threat prevents their effective use.

Russia has resorted to restoring engines from old Soviet tanks that were previously considered irreparable. This initiative aims to increase the number of operational tanks, potentially reaching or exceeding pre-war levels. However, the drones that destroyed the original tanks remain an active threat on the battlefield. As a result, while Russia may achieve a higher tank count, the actual combat effectiveness of these revived vehicles is severely compromised. The refurbished engines do not address the vulnerability of tanks to drone attacks, which have proven capable of destroying even modern armor. Thus, these tanks are likely to suffer the same fate as their predecessors. This situation highlights that merely restoring equipment does not overcome the tactical challenges posed by drone warfare.
