Russia launched a major ballistic missile attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, in an overnight operation, Ukraine's air force said early Sunday. Witnesses reported hearing several explosions, including from air defense systems. An AFP journalist described one explosion as so powerful that it set off car alarms across the city center.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said fires broke out in residential and non-residential areas, including a dormitory, a residential block, and a supermarket. Emergency services were deployed. At least seven people were injured, one treated at the scene. The city military administration reported one fatality based on preliminary information, though Klitschko's messages did not mention any deaths.

The attack came a day after Ukraine sent attack drones to destroy e-commerce warehouses in the Moscow and Tambov regions, killing at least eight people and causing major fires. On the same day, Russian strikes killed at least two people in Ukraine. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine is well into its fourth year. Both sides have repeatedly used drone strikes, but Russia is increasingly employing ballistic missiles aimed at Kyiv and other locations. Meanwhile, Kyiv has warned of dwindling stocks of interceptor missiles used to block Russian ballistic missiles and is calling on allies for help with air defenses.
