Russia’s fuel crisis deepens: diesel sees biggest weekly price jump since 2022

Diesel prices in Russia rose 3.4% in the week ending July 6, the largest weekly increase since 2022, while gasoline prices climbed 2.1%. President Putin acknowledged long lines at gas stations and said the problems are temporary, partly due to Ukrainian strikes on refineries.

According to the latest weekly data from Russia’s state statistics service Rosstat, gasoline prices in Russia increased by 2.1% in the week from June 30 to July 6, while diesel fuel rose by 3.4%. The weekly increase in diesel prices was the largest since 2022, as reported by The Bell, citing Rosstat data.

The average consumer gasoline price stood at 74.01 rubles per liter. AI-92 gasoline sold for 70.21 rubles per liter, AI-95 for 76.19 rubles, and AI-98 and above for 98.04 rubles. Diesel averaged 87.76 rubles per liter nationwide.

Rosstat did not specify which region saw the sharpest price increases this time. The previous week, Sevastopol recorded a 30% rise in gasoline prices.

In the week before that, June 23–29, gasoline prices rose 1.6% and diesel 2.2%.

Russia has been grappling with a widening fuel crisis since early June, with shortages spreading to more regions. In late June, President Vladimir Putin acknowledged for the first time that there were queues at gas stations and that the right grade of gasoline could not always be found, though he assured the public that Russia had reserves.

On July 8, Putin held another meeting on the fuel crisis, stating that the problems are temporary and partly result from Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries. He claimed that Ukraine aimed to disrupt the summer vacation season.
