Russian drone strikes hit Ukraine-Poland border crossing, sparking fires
An overnight drone attack near the Yahodyn crossing in western Ukraine set fire to a petrol station and trucks, while a Kyiv-Warsaw train was also damaged nearby. No injuries were reported.
Russian drones struck several locations in western Ukraine overnight, including the area around the Yahodyn border crossing, one of the main road routes used for military and humanitarian supplies entering Ukraine from Poland and other Western allies.
Valentyna Chernysh, a spokesperson for the Volyn Customs Service, told Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne that falling drone debris ignited a petrol station and several trucks near the checkpoint. The crossing building itself was not hit and remained intact, and no one was injured. Border operations were briefly suspended during the air-raid alert as staff and travellers sheltered, before processing resumed as emergency crews cleared the damage. Footage from the scene showed firefighters working at the petrol station and damage to a nearby road.
The same night, a Kyiv-Warsaw passenger train was hit about two kilometres from the Polish border, damaging its locomotive, according to state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia. Passengers and crew had been evacuated after an advance warning, and no injuries were reported.
Western Ukraine has so far seen comparatively less of the intense fighting concentrated in the country's east. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the border-area strikes amounted to more than an attack on Ukraine's frontier, calling them Putin's terror knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO, and urged European countries to tighten sanctions on Moscow.
Polish officials said the strike site was located roughly 800 metres from the Polish border and confirmed no injuries on the Polish side. Ukrainian and Polish authorities are continuing to assess the extent of the damage.
