Russian drones hit Ukraine's border zone with Poland, a day after strike on Moldova crossing
On Sunday, Russian drones struck a fuel station and a passenger train locomotive in northwestern Ukraine, just hundreds of meters and two kilometers from the Polish border. The attack follows a recent strike on the Ukraine–Moldova border crossing that killed two border guards.
Russia carried out drone strikes on Sunday in Ukraine's border area with Poland. In the small town of Yahodyn in Volyn region, drone debris sparked a fire at a fuel station and set several nearby trucks ablaze. No casualties were reported. The site lies only a few hundred meters from the Polish border, and the nearby crossing point briefly suspended operations before resuming by mid-morning.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the strikes as a direct threat to the European Union and NATO, framing them as part of a broader pattern of Russian aggression near the alliance's border.
That same morning, also in Volyn region, another drone hit the locomotive of a passenger train roughly two kilometers from the Polish border. President Volodymyr Zelensky said both the train and the fuel station had been deliberately targeted.
Link to the Moldova border attack
The strikes came just days after a separate incident in which Russian drones hit the Starokozache border checkpoint in Odesa region, near the Moldovan border. That attack killed two Ukrainian border guards, injured three more people, and damaged crossing infrastructure. Moldova's Foreign Ministry said the strike posed a direct threat to the country's security and that of its citizens. Drone fragments resembling Russia's "Geran"-type unmanned aircraft were also found in northern Moldova.
Drone attacks intensify
Zelensky said Russia had launched more than 2,000 drones at Ukraine in the past week alone, including an increasing number of jet-powered models that are faster and harder to intercept. Fuel station networks have also come under heavier attack, prompting some operators in Kyiv to install protective metal cage structures around their sites. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continue striking targets inside Russia — overnight, Ukraine's military reported an attack on the TANECO oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, in Russia's Tatarstan region.
