Russian drone strike hits Kyiv-Warsaw train near Polish border
At least six people were killed as Russia launched over 450 drones and missiles at Ukraine overnight, with a Kyiv-Warsaw passenger train struck just two kilometres from the Polish border, prompting alerts in Poland and Lithuania.
Russia launched a large-scale overnight assault on Ukraine involving more than 450 drones and missiles. Ukraine's air force said it shot down 405 drones and four missiles. At least six people were killed and more than 40 injured across the country.
Western Ukraine, usually calmer than Kyiv or the eastern front, was hit particularly hard. A passenger train travelling from Kyiv to Warsaw was struck by a drone just two kilometres from the Polish border. Katerina Sergatskova, director of the organisation Daily Humanity, who was on board, said passengers were told to evacuate around 9am as the train neared the border, shortly after she heard the first drone. No casualties were reported on the train. A truck was also hit near the Dorohusk-Yahodyn border crossing. Russia's defence ministry said it had targeted infrastructure used to move military cargo from Europe into Ukraine.
Three people died in the eastern Donetsk region, and a 71-year-old woman was killed in the southern Mykolaiv region.
Ukraine's foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, described the strikes as "Putin's terror knocking directly on the doors of the EU and Nato," while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine was fighting daily to stop the attacks spreading further into Europe.
Poland's foreign minister, Radosław Sikorski, said Putin was escalating, and the interior minister, Marcin Kierwiński, said the situation was being monitored continuously. In Lithuania, authorities briefly closed Vilnius airport over a suspected drone sighting that turned out to be a flock of birds; it reopened after 40 minutes.
US President Donald Trump urged Zelenskyy to stop striking Russian diesel infrastructure, saying it was causing fuel shortages.
