Russian Mi-8 helicopter briefly violates Polish airspace
On Tuesday, a Russian Mi-8 helicopter flying from the Kaliningrad region entered Polish airspace for 42 seconds near the village of Braniewo. Polish military scrambled fighter jets in response.
Poland's Armed Forces Operational Command reported on Tuesday that a Russian Mi-8 helicopter had violated the country's airspace. The incursion occurred at 11:08 local time north of the village of Braniewo, near the Baltic coast.
According to the Polish military, the helicopter was flying from Russia's Kaliningrad region and penetrated Polish airspace to a depth of approximately 300 meters, remaining there for 42 seconds.
The helicopter's flight was tracked throughout by Polish armed forces radar systems. In response, fighter jets were scrambled, while ground forces and equipment were placed on standby.
Testing air defenses
Polish military officials stated that the nature of the incident suggests Russia is once again testing the readiness of Poland's air defense systems. Air defense crews maintain round-the-clock surveillance and remain in constant readiness to ensure the security of Polish airspace.
This is not an isolated incident. On September 15, an unidentified drone approached the American missile defense base in Redzikowo, in Poland's Pomeranian Voivodeship. On September 17, a Russian attack drone crashed near the Polish border in Ukraine's Volyn region.
