Russia's overnight drone and missile barrage sparks fires across Ukrainian cities
Russia launched a large-scale overnight drone and missile attack on several Ukrainian regions, damaging homes and infrastructure in Sumy and Odesa, while a daytime strike on a Kharkiv shopping centre killed one person.
A massive Russian drone and missile assault struck multiple Ukrainian regions overnight into 27 August, sparking fires and damaging residential buildings and infrastructure.
In Sumy, strikes hit a residential district, igniting fires that damaged homes and commercial buildings. Emergency crews were sent to three sites as residents assessed the destruction.
In Odesa, firefighters battled numerous blazes following what regional officials called a large-scale attack lasting more than seven hours. Among the damaged structures were a 16-storey apartment building, a private house, a garage, educational facilities, vehicles and a grain elevator.
Hundreds of targets downed
Ukraine's Air Force reported that its air defences shot down or neutralised 233 Russian targets overnight, including 258 attack drones, two Oniks anti-ship missiles, and several Iskander-M and KN-23 ballistic missiles. Roughly a third of the drones were jet-powered, with the rest comprising Shahed-type, Gerbera and Banderol systems along with decoys.
Additional damage was reported in the Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava and Zaporizhzhia regions. In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said falling drone debris and resulting fires across several districts injured four people, two of whom were hospitalised.
A separate daytime strike on 27 August hit an Epicentr shopping centre in Kharkiv's Osnovyanskyi district. Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said a Russian Geran-4 Seeker drone killed one man and injured at least four others.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said emergency teams remained deployed across the affected areas. Russian defence officials stated the strikes targeted military-industrial facilities, oil refineries, logistics hubs and port infrastructure.
