Nine killed in Russian strikes on Kyiv, officials say
Russian overnight strikes on Kyiv killed nine people and wounded 23, including four children. Ukraine's foreign minister called for urgent delivery of additional air defense systems.
Nine people were killed and 23 injured in Russian strikes on Kyiv overnight, according to Ukraine's State Emergency Service and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. Rescuers said seven of the dead were in the Darnytskyi district in the southeast of the capital, and two in the Solomianskyi district in the west. Four children are among the wounded.
In Solomianskyi district, a five-story residential building was partially destroyed and caught fire, and cars in a parking lot burned down. In Darnytskyi district, administrative and non-residential buildings were destroyed and set ablaze. In Shevchenkivskyi district in central Kyiv, fires broke out in a non-residential building and on the territory of a film studio, and ambulance vehicles caught fire. A store was damaged on the left bank of the Dnipro, and four private houses and outbuildings were damaged in Pecherskyi district. Two more people were injured near Kyiv, where a large warehouse caught fire, judging by photos and videos published by rescuers.
Ukrainian Telegram channels calculated that Russia fired more than 20 missiles at Kyiv, including ballistic and cruise missiles. Foreign Minister Sybiha mentioned 30 ballistic missiles. He said Russia had turned Kyiv into a real hell that night, adding that this was already the second such large-scale attack in just two days. Unable to achieve its goals on the battlefield, Russia is stepping up air strikes and terror against civilians, he said. Sybiha stressed that Ukraine urgently needs additional air and missile defense systems and interceptor missiles, and that the speed of decision-making and deliveries is crucial. He said every decision that strengthens the protection of Ukraine's airspace saves lives, while every delay leads to deaths and war crimes.
