Russian overnight strikes on Ukraine kill at least 12, wound over 80
Russia launched a massive drone and missile assault on multiple Ukrainian regions overnight, killing at least 12 people and wounding more than 80. President Zelenskyy called for tougher sanctions and more air defense support.
Russia unleashed a large-scale overnight attack on Ukraine, firing six missiles and 151 attack drones at 12 locations across the country, the Ukrainian Air Force reported. Ukrainian forces said they managed to shoot down 135 of the drones.
The assault left at least 12 people dead and more than 80 injured. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a drone strike killed three people in a village in the Kyiv region — a three-year-old child and the child's grandparents. Six ballistic missiles struck civilian infrastructure in Kyiv itself, killing one more person.
In the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, three people were killed and four wounded, regional governor Ivan Fedorov said. A further five people died and nearly 50 were injured across the Kharkiv, Donetsk and Kherson regions, according to local officials.
Call for tougher sanctions
Writing on X, Zelenskyy urged allies to impose new sanctions aimed at halting production of Russia's ballistic missiles and to supply more interceptor missiles to strengthen Ukraine's air defenses.
The strikes came as Kyiv continues pressing Western partners for additional air defense systems and interceptors.
Separately, Zelenskyy traveled to Serbia on Saturday — his first visit there since Russia's full-scale invasion began — meeting President Aleksandar Vučić and Prime Minister Đuro Macut. Talks focused on rebuilding infrastructure, finalizing a free-trade agreement this year, and preparing for the coming winter.
