Child among three killed in Russian missile strikes near Kyiv
At least three people, including a child, were killed in overnight Russian missile attacks east of Kyiv, with three more wounded, just days after strikes across Ukraine killed 21 people.
Overnight from Friday into Saturday, missiles struck an area east of Kyiv, with residents reporting powerful explosions. Timur Tkachenko, head of the regional military administration, said the ballistic missile strikes killed at least three people, including a child, and wounded three others.
Falling debris damaged apartment buildings and cars, and a fire broke out at a separate building. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram that emergency crews were battling fires at a building and a fuel tank.
Ukraine's state emergency service, DSNS, released photos showing garages, a business premises and another building ablaze in Kyiv, saying the full number of casualties was still being confirmed.
Zelensky raises alarm over interceptor shortage
The attack came as President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Serbia on his first visit since warning that Ukraine's ability to defend against Russian missile attacks is being undermined by dwindling stocks of interceptors.
Earlier in the week, Zelensky said delays in receiving anti-ballistic systems from partners were causing "horrific casualties and destruction," adding that stronger interceptor capability could have saved lives in recent deadly assaults. He later said allied supplies of interceptors had been "significantly reduced" this year.
The strikes followed Ukrainian attacks on two oil refineries deep inside Russia and on Moscow-linked vessels in the Black Sea, which Zelensky said were meant to curb the oil revenues Russia uses to finance its war. Recent mediation efforts have stalled, contributing to an escalation of strikes on both sides.
