Russia Uses Kinburn Spit to Block Access to Mykolaiv Ports
Russia is using the Kinburn Spit as a strategic position to obstruct maritime access from Mykolaiv ports, giving it an edge in the Black Sea.

Russian forces continue to use the Kinburn Spit, a small peninsula in southern Ukraine, as a strategic point to disrupt vessel traffic from the ports of Mykolaiv. This position provides Russia with a significant advantage in the Black Sea, as it lies directly at the entrance to the Dnipro-Bug estuary.
The Mykolaiv ports are crucial for Ukrainian grain exports and other cargo flows. Russian control over the spit allows it to hinder or even block the operation of these ports, exerting pressure on Ukraine's economy and global food supplies.
The Kinburn Spit is a narrow sandbar separating the Dnipro-Bug estuary from the Black Sea. Since 2022, it has been under Russian control and used as a base for artillery and drones to threaten vessels and port infrastructure.
Ukrainian officials have stated that neutralizing this position is essential to restore full maritime access and ensure navigation safety. However, military operations in the area are complicated due to Russian fortifications and dense defenses.
International observers emphasize that the Kinburn Spit remains one of the few points giving Russia a strategic edge in the Black Sea region, and its recapture would be a significant step in unblocking Ukraine's sea routes.
