Russian court sentences 'Masyanya' creator Oleg Kuvayev in absentia to four years over antiwar cartoon
A St. Petersburg court has sentenced animator Oleg Kuvayev in absentia to four years and one month in prison over an antiwar cartoon episode and violations of Russia's 'foreign agent' law. Kuvayev has lived in Israel since 2006.
St. Petersburg's Nevsky District Court has sentenced Oleg Kuvayev, creator of the animated series "Masyanya," in absentia to four years and one month in a penal colony, according to Mediazona.
Kuvayev faced charges of failing to meet obligations imposed on him as a designated "foreign agent" under Article 330.1 of Russia's Criminal Code, along with charges under Article 280.4 for calling for actions against state security. Prosecutors had sought a term of five years and 11 months.
Case rooted in antiwar episode
News that Kuvayev was under criminal investigation over calls for actions against state security first surfaced in October 2023. The case traces back to an episode of "Masyanya" in which the show's main character encourages Russian soldiers to surrender.
'Foreign agent' designation
Russia's Justice Ministry labeled Kuvayev a "foreign agent" in December 2023. A separate criminal case was opened against him under the "foreign agent" law after he reportedly missed mandatory reporting deadlines to the ministry on three separate occasions.
Kuvayev has resided in Israel since 2006. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he has continued to produce antiwar installments of "Masyanya."
