The number of people killed in the aftermath of a Russian strike and subsequent explosions in the village of Myla, located in the Bucha district of Kyiv Oblast, has climbed to 38, while 52 people were injured, five of them children, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Oblast Military Administration.

Tkachenko said nine of the injured remain hospitalised, with doctors describing their condition as moderate. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on 30 August that the death toll had reached 38, while citing a figure of 20 injured.

Damage and cause

Around 300 structures in Myla and nearby settlements were damaged, including more than 200 houses and 14 apartment blocks. State Emergency Service crews have since extinguished all fires triggered by the strike.

Powerful explosions rocked the Bucha district on the evening of 28 August, setting a warehouse facility ablaze and forcing authorities to close the M-06 Kyiv-Chop highway in both directions between the 15th and 32nd kilometre markers.

Zelenskyy said ammunition should never be stored near residential areas, noting that the first strike on Myla hit a defence forces warehouse that should not have been located there. Ukraine's General Staff, commenting on the scale of the deaths, said Russia bears ultimate responsibility for the tragedy.

It later emerged that most of those killed in the drone strike and subsequent ammunition detonation were residents of a care home for the elderly.
