A Russian strike on a warehouse near Kyiv has killed at least 37 people and forced the evacuation of nearly 400 residents. President Zelensky has ordered an investigation into why munitions were stored so close to homes.
At least 37 people have died after a Russian strike hit a warehouse near Kyiv, Ukrainian officials have confirmed. Nearly 400 people living in the surrounding area were evacuated in the aftermath of the attack.
Footage circulating online captured the moment of a large explosion at the site, along with the thick plumes of smoke that rose afterward.
Site stored military equipment near homes
The warehouse that was hit had been used to store weapons for Ukraine's armed forces, and it stood close to a residential neighbourhood. Its location has raised questions about why such a facility was placed so near populated housing.
Investigation launched
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said an investigation has been opened into what he described as "terrible negligence on the part of those who stored explosives right next to people." The probe is expected to examine who was responsible for the decision to keep the munitions depot so close to residents, a factor that may have contributed to the high death toll.
