Russian strikes on Sumy and Mykolaiv kill children and elderly women

Russian forces launched overnight attacks on the Ukrainian cities of Sumy and Mykolaiv on August 4, resulting in the deaths of several civilians, including young children, and damage to civilian infrastructure.

In Sumy, guided aerial bombs struck civilian infrastructure, according to Oleh Hryhorov, the head of the region’s military administration. Two girls, aged 5 and 10, and an elderly woman were killed in the attack. Hryhorov said the children’s bodies were recovered from the rubble of their home. Four other people sought medical assistance for acute stress reactions, according to the regional administration.

In Mykolaiv, a Russian strike hit a residential area, killing an 89-year-old woman, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported. The attack wounded seven people, including two girls aged 2 and 12.

The Ukrainian Air Force provided details on the scope of the overnight assault, saying Russia launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 136 attack drones at Ukraine on August 4. Of those, 117 drones were shot down or jammed by Ukrainian forces.
