Russian strike on aid distribution site in southern Ukraine kills 29, 48 missing
A Russian attack on a site in southern Ukraine where people had gathered for humanitarian aid has killed 29 people, with 48 still missing. Overnight strikes also hit power plants across the country.
The death toll from a Russian attack on a site in southern Ukraine, where people had gathered to receive humanitarian aid, rose to 29 on Tuesday. A further 48 people are still listed as missing, according to a report by FRANCE 24 correspondent Emmanuelle Chaze in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital.
The attack was part of a broader wave of overnight strikes aimed at power plants in several parts of Ukraine. The strikes also damaged hospitals and wounded scores of people.
Scale of the assault
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an online post that Russia used 289 attack drones, 17 ballistic missiles and 59 cruise missiles across nine regions. The attacks forced the introduction of emergency power cuts in the country.
The source report does not specify exactly where in the south the aid site was hit, nor which power plants and hospitals were affected. The casualty figures were updated on Tuesday and may change as rescue work and the search for victims continue.
