Attack on the capital

Russian forces struck Ukraine's capital Kyiv with ballistic missiles early on Saturday, injuring at least 10 people. The city's military administration reported damage to a non-residential building in one district and smoke coming from another. An office building caught fire, and a transformer substation was also burning. Windows were blown out in some residential buildings.

Air defense challenges

Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched six ballistic missiles, six cruise missiles, and 121 drones. At least two cruise missiles and 111 drones were shot down. However, Ukraine has largely been unable to intercept ballistic missiles, which travel at several times the speed of sound, due to a critical shortage of munitions for Patriot air defense systems. In total, 11 locations were hit across Ukraine.

Intensified attacks

Russia has stepped up attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks. This month, strikes on the city and surrounding region have killed more than 60 people. Ukraine is awaiting fresh supplies of air defense munitions as its current stockpiles are critically low, leaving the capital exposed to Russian attacks.
