Chris Sutton and AI Predict World Cup Round of 16 Matches
BBC Sport expert Chris Sutton and artificial intelligence offer predictions for the World Cup last-32 ties, with users outperforming both in accuracy so far.

After the Group Stage
With 16 of the 48 teams eliminated, the World Cup knockout rounds begin. The round of 16 includes England vs DR Congo and defending champions Argentina vs surprise package Cape Verde.
The biggest shock in the final group games came from Ecuador, who beat Germany. Only 597 out of over 56,000 users correctly predicted that result, while Sutton and AI both got it wrong.
Prediction Accuracy
From the last set of group matches, Sutton and AI correctly predicted 15 of 24 games (62.5%), while users got 17 (70.8%). Overall, after 104 matches, Sutton has 41 correct predictions (57%), AI has 43 (60%), and users lead with 48 (67%).
Before the tournament, Sutton predicted group winners correctly for 7 out of 12 groups, but only got the full order right in three groups. AI predictions were generated using Microsoft Copilot Chat, simply by asking it to 'predict the results of the World Cup last-32 ties'.
New Predictor Game
A new BBC predictor game allows readers to pick a winner for each knockout tie. The game is available on the BBC Sport website.
