Atletico Madrid have officially announced the signing of Argentina defender Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur. The London club received €40 million for the player, who has signed a five-year deal. Tottenham will also be entitled to 15% of any future transfer fee should Romero move on again.

Arsenal, Tottenham's fierce London rivals, had also shown strong interest in the defender. Although Romero himself was reportedly willing to make that move, Tottenham refused to sanction a transfer to Arsenal.

Five seasons in London

Romero joined Tottenham in the summer of 2021, initially on loan from Italian club Atalanta. The move became permanent a year later for €53 million. In total, he made 123 Premier League appearances for the club.

At the most recent World Cup, Romero was a key part of Argentina's defense as the team reached the final, where it lost to Spain. He started seven matches and scored one goal during the tournament.

Tottenham had already strengthened their central defense this summer, bringing in Marco Senesi as a free agent from Bournemouth and Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton.
