Critic: HBO's 'Rome' did everything better than 'Game of Thrones' – including the finale

A critic argues that HBO's historical drama 'Rome' surpassed 'Game of Thrones' in every way, including its rushed but ultimately better finale.

When HBO launched 'Rome' in 2005, it was one of the most expensive TV shows ever made. The series was shot on a massive outdoor recreation of ancient Rome at Italy's Cinecittà studios, with no expense spared on costumes, props, or fake blood. Half a decade later, 'Game of Thrones' followed in its footsteps with complex plotting, shocking betrayals, and Shakespearean dialogue.

Both shows depicted chaotic civil wars, but 'Rome' excelled by focusing on ordinary people. Its main protagonists are two soldiers, the taciturn Lucius Vorenus (Kevin McKidd) and rowdy Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson). They stumble through Roman history, remaining common citizens amidst the great men. The show also highlights everyday Roman life—how they lived, loved, ate, and worked.

'Rome' was canceled after two seasons, though a five-season arc was planned, making the final episodes rushed. However, the critic notes that even this hurried conclusion was better than 'Game of Thrones'' finale. The cast includes Tobias Menzies (Brutus), Polly Walker (Atia), and Ray Stevenson, who died in 2023. Available on HBO Max in the US, UK, and Australia, as well as for rent on Apple TV and YouTube, 'Rome' remains highly rewatchable.
