A family that endured a devastating fire in Krustkalni, in Ķekava municipality, and lost two children in the tragedy is seeking to have a closed criminal case reopened. State Police had previously decided to terminate the criminal proceedings, concluding that no responsibility could be established on the part of either individuals or legal entities.

The family's concerns

The affected family, together with their lawyer, believe the investigation was not conducted thoroughly enough. In their view, the circumstances of the case were not examined in a way that would allow a reliable conclusion that no one bears responsibility for the fire and its consequences. As a result, the family wants the terminated proceedings to be resumed.

Police response

State Police disagree with the criticism raised by the family and their lawyer. The agency maintains that the investigation was carried out properly and that the decision to close the criminal case was justified.

For now, the matter remains disputed — the affected family is pushing for the case to be reopened, while law enforcement insists its work was correct and that the conclusion of no established liability stands.
