Kubilius: Ukraine's successes could force Putin to start real peace talks
EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius believes that Ukraine's successful strikes on Russia's energy infrastructure and Black Sea fleet could be a turning point in the war and force Russian President Vladimir Putin to begin genuine peace negotiations.
European Commission Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius said in an interview with Euronews that Ukraine's recent successful strikes on Russia's energy infrastructure and Black Sea fleet could become a turning point in the war. According to him, these attacks clearly show that Moscow is finding it increasingly difficult to achieve its war goals.
"This should be a clear signal to Putin and the Kremlin that he will not be able to make significant progress in his war aims. It is time to start real negotiations for a just peace," Kubilius emphasized.
Kubilius recalled that the European Union continues to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities. The bloc has already approved extensive financial support, a significant part of which is earmarked for military needs. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently announced in Kyiv a new agreement on drone production.
Speaking about European security, the commissioner acknowledged that several member states have become more cautious about using defense loans due to fiscal constraints. At the same time, he stressed that the EU's eastern flank countries, including the Baltic states, have taken on one of the largest roles in strengthening common defense, with a particular focus on the development of drone and anti-drone technologies.
