Kulbergs Discusses Baltic Security Strengthening with US Congressmen
Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs and Defense Minister Raivis Melnis met with the largest US congressional delegation to date, discussing regional security, NATO's eastern flank defense, and support for Ukraine.
Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs (AS) met on Sunday with members of the US House Appropriations Committee in the largest delegation to visit Latvia – seven congressmen. The talks focused on bilateral security partnership, strengthening Baltic defense capabilities, and the importance of allied military presence.
Kulbergs emphasized that such visits and regular dialogue strengthen cooperation and provide confidence in jointly ensuring regional security. He thanked the US for consistent support and the presence of American troops in Latvia. The Prime Minister reaffirmed that security remains the government's priority, noting that Latvia's defense budget reaches 5% of GDP and will be maintained at this level.
As the PM's communications consultant Elīna Šverna recalled, the US Congress approved $200 million in funding early 2026 for the continuation of the Baltic Security Initiative, which boosts the region's defense capabilities and cooperation with the US.
The talks also covered continued support for Ukraine against Russian aggression, highlighting the US role in strengthening Ukraine's resistance and achieving a just and lasting peace.
Defense Minister Raivis Melnis also met with the House Appropriations delegation. Officials discussed bilateral cooperation in defense capabilities and military industry development, conclusions from the NATO summit in Ankara, and long-term aid to Ukraine. Melnis stressed the importance of the transatlantic bond and shared values in the current dynamic geopolitical environment.
