PM Kulbergs demands explanation for €147,000 grant to bridge championship after event had ended

Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs of the "Apvienotais saraksts" party has requested that the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) provide full documentation on how €225,000 in state funding was distributed among seven international sports events. The information was confirmed by the prime minister's communications adviser, Elīna Šverna.

Kulbergs has asked the ministry to submit all documents related to the funding decisions for these seven events.

Bridge championships under scrutiny

The prime minister's attention has been particularly drawn to the sum granted to the Latvian Bridge Federation — €147,366. Kulbergs has requested a legally grounded explanation from the ministry for this allocation, since it concerns two bridge championships that had already concluded by the time the funding was approved.

The prime minister's office expects the ministry to justify why the funding decision was made after the events had already taken place, rather than beforehand, as is typically the practice when planning support for sporting events.

It is not yet known when the ministry will respond to the prime minister's request or how it will explain the circumstances and timing behind the decision.
