Kulbergs Promises to Keep Government Priorities, But Refine Action Plan

Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs has pledged to maintain the priorities set by the current government while ordering the State Chancellery to adjust the action plan to reflect financial realities. The plan was not approved because many measures are not financially viable in the existing budget.

Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs (AS) announced that his government will preserve the previously defined priorities, but the action plan will be revised to ensure it is realistically achievable within the available budget and timeframe. Kulbergs instructed the State Chancellery to prepare an updated government action plan by the next Cabinet meeting.

As reported, the Cabinet of Ministers has not yet approved Kulbergs' government action plan this week. Finance Minister Māris Kučinskis (AS) explained that some planned measures are not financially feasible under the current budget and have too high a fiscal impact. The plan will be refined within a week.

The updated order stipulates that ministries, the State Chancellery, and the Competition Council must adhere to the funding allocated in the annual budget and medium-term budget plan. They must also ensure the involvement of social partners and non-governmental organizations. The Prime Minister will convene monthly Cabinet working sessions to monitor priority implementation. Institutions must electronically submit progress reports by the 30th of each month, with the first report due by July 30 and a full report on all measures by October 15.

Kulbergs previously acknowledged that only three of 61 priority tasks were fully completed in the first month, expressing dissatisfaction. However, he noted that ministries have laid groundwork for completing the remaining tasks. The government's priorities include national security, including secure elections, anti-corruption and anti-cartel efforts, budget stability, economic development, as well as health, welfare, and demographic issues.
