Kuldīga municipality unifies look of address signs across region

The Kuldīga municipal council has approved unified regulations for the design of building number plates and street name signs throughout the region. Existing signs do not need to be replaced immediately — only when an address changes or a sign is damaged.

The Kuldīga municipal council has adopted new binding regulations that merge and replace the previously separate rules used in Skrunda, Alsunga and Kuldīga for street and square name signs as well as building numbering plates. The goal is to create a consistent public visual identity that makes it easier for residents, visitors, delivery services and emergency responders to find their way around.

The new rules are more detailed than before and for the first time also address matters such as apartment entrance unit-number plates, which previously had no unified standard and in many buildings simply did not exist. The regulation specifies how the plates should look, where they should be placed, and who is responsible for installing and maintaining them.

Colors vary by area

To preserve the distinct identity of the municipality's different territories, different background colors have been set: dark brown for Kuldīga and several of its surrounding parishes, dark green for the Skrunda area, and dark blue for the Alsunga area. Plate sizes and the typeface will also be standardized across the whole municipality.

No rush to replace existing signs

Residents are not required to immediately replace current signs if they remain in good condition. The new requirements apply mainly when an address changes, a building's ownership changes, a sign is damaged, or new buildings or streets requiring addresses are created. Street and square signs will be produced and maintained by the municipality, while building number or house name plates are the responsibility of the owner. Apartment building number and unit plates fall under the property manager, while each resident is responsible for their own apartment number sign.

Residents with questions are advised to contact the municipality's construction department. The new regulations will be available on the Likumi.lv portal within a month.
