Culture Minister Denies Exception for Chekhov Theatre in Language Restrictions
Culture Minister Nauris Puntulis plans to officially inform the management of the Chekhov Theatre about his decision not to allow exceptions from Russian language usage restrictions. Theatre industry representatives view the minister's actions as an election campaign.

In the coming days, Culture Minister Nauris Puntulis (National Alliance) plans to officially present his decision on restricting the use of the Russian language to the management of the Mikhail Chekhov Riga Russian Theatre. The order, issued after the Midsummer holiday, has raised many questions.
The minister has already met with the heads of Daugavpils Theatre and Chekhov Theatre to discuss the matter. However, theatre industry representatives view the minister's actions as an election campaign, where there is no room for democratically considered decisions. They believe this approach threatens the theatre and divides society.
