A new traffic overpass from Tvaika Street to Kundziņsala, along with a new port checkpoint at 42 Uriekstes Street (Delta 17), will open on 1 November on Kundziņsala, an island area of the Port of Riga in the Latvian capital. The overpass and checkpoint will serve traffic travelling to and from the port territory. The opening was announced by Liene Ozola, head of the public relations department at the Freeport of Riga Authority, the body that manages the port.

Open to residents too

The new overpass will be freely accessible not only for port traffic but also for residents of nearby neighbourhoods. An additional turning lane for cars has been built on it, intended for drivers heading towards the Kundziņsala residential area and for those leaving it.

Pedestrians and cyclists

The overpass also includes a lit path for pedestrians and cyclists, and special horizontal markings for runners. To help pedestrians and cyclists reach the overpass, three lifts with stairs have been built: one on the Tvaika Street side and two on Kundziņsala. They provide access from both the residential area and the port territory.

Existing bridge remains

Residents will still be able to reach the Kundziņsala residential area, as before, by the bridge from Aptiekas Street. The new overpass therefore becomes an additional route to the island.
