High demand pushes up wood pellet prices; drop expected in autumn

A situation has emerged in Latvia where heating pellets are currently unavailable to buy in some places, while in areas where they can be purchased, buyers must pay considerably more than last year. This is happening even though the heating season has not officially started yet.

Industry representatives explain that the problem is not linked to a shortage of raw materials or finished pellet product — there are enough pellets in Latvia overall. Instead, the situation stems from an unusually high level of demand that has built up in the market.

This elevated demand is identified as the main factor currently pushing pellet prices upward. When many households and other pellet users try to stock up simultaneously ahead of the heating season, the market cannot immediately meet every request in every location at the moment it is needed.

Industry representatives nonetheless remain optimistic about how the situation will develop in the near future. They predict that once the initial wave of demand subsides in autumn, pellet prices should begin to decline. This would mean that consumers who are willing to wait with their purchase could benefit from buying pellets somewhat later, once the market situation stabilizes.
