Kurzeme Court: Debt Has an Expiration Date – Creditor Left Empty-Handed After 16 Years

The Kurzeme Court has issued a decision that could set a significant precedent in debt recovery practices. According to the case heard in court, a loan taken out in 2007 turned into a claim of nearly €7,500 16 years later. On one side was one of Latvia's largest debt collection companies with a team of lawyers; on the other, two ordinary people from the Kurzeme region.
Initially, the situation seemed hopeless for the debtors, but they found an unexpected ally – a word written in the law that allowed the entire debt to be voided. The court recognized that the statute of limitations for debt collection had expired, thus rejecting the creditor's claim. This ruling will not please creditors, as it confirms that debts do have an expiration date.
