Quartararo joins Honda on two-year deal
Former MotoGP world champion Fabio Quartararo has signed a two-year contract with Honda, ending his eight-year partnership with Yamaha.
Fabio Quartararo, the 27-year-old French rider who won the 2021 MotoGP title with Yamaha, has joined Honda Racing Corporation. The team announced a contract for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.
Quartararo made his MotoGP debut in 2019 with Petronas Yamaha and spent the last six seasons with Monster Energy Yamaha. He has not won a race since 2022 and finished 10th, 13th, and 9th in the standings over the last three years. Currently, after 11 rounds, he sits 14th with 55 points, while leader Jorge Martin (Aprilia, Prima Pramac) has 208 points.
From 2027, MotoGP will introduce technical changes, including reducing engine capacity from 1000cc to 850cc, which could alter the competitive balance and end Ducati and Aprilia's recent dominance.
On Tuesday, Honda also announced a multi-year contract with 20-year-old Colombian David Alonso, the 2024 Moto3 champion. It remains unclear whether he will be Quartararo's teammate in the factory team or race for the satellite LCR squad. Meanwhile, Brazilian Diogo Moreira, who is having a promising rookie season with LCR this year, may be promoted to the factory team next season.
