Kwaśniewski Predicts Ceasefire in Ukraine War in Coming Months
Former Polish President Aleksander Kwaśniewski believes a ceasefire, not peace, is imminent in the Russia-Ukraine war and urges the West to use this period for concrete support.

Former Polish President Aleksander Kwaśniewski has expressed confidence that the war between Russia and Ukraine will reach a real ceasefire in the coming months. He made this statement at the "Ukrainian Lunch" in Gdańsk, organized by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation on the eve of URC-2026.
Kwaśniewski emphasized that the war has now reached a special moment thanks to Ukraine's determination and its ability to produce and use weapons against the aggressor. "I think it's important to understand—and this is my opinion—that something will happen in the coming months. Not peace. Because I do not believe that as long as Putin is the leader of Russia, this country will be interested in real peace, and certainly not in a just peace. But I think we are close to a certain ceasefire, to a new situation," Kwaśniewski said.
He stressed the need to effectively use this situation to support Ukraine. "Because if a ceasefire in this situation means for Russia the reorganization of military forces, production of more weapons, and training of North Korean soldiers, then that will be Russia's success. We must use this time to support Ukraine not with words but with actions," the former Polish president said.
"This means negotiations with the EU, real investments, good reconstruction and cooperation projects—everything possible. We must prepare all these things. Not talk about them, but have them on the table," Kwaśniewski added.
It is worth recalling that the US State Department assesses that Ukraine is currently in a moment where it is winning the war. According to the Financial Times, last week at the G7 summit in France, US President Donald Trump told Volodymyr Zelensky that he was impressed by Kyiv's recent military successes.
