Quebec heads to the polls as separatists eye a comeback

Voters in Canada's French-speaking province of Quebec went to the polls on Monday, with the separatist Parti Quebecois potentially returning to power. The vote is seen as a test of Prime Minister Mark Carney's push for national unity against US pressure.

Canada's province of Quebec held a provincial election on Monday that could see the separatist Parti Quebecois (PQ) return to power, according to pre-election expectations. Quebec is Canada's largest French-speaking province, and its political direction has long carried weight for the country's overall cohesion.

The vote is being watched closely as a test for Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has recently emphasized the importance of national unity as Canada confronts US President Donald Trump's trade war measures and his repeated suggestions about annexing Canada. Those threats and tariffs have angered Canadians across the country.

Carney's stance not seen as rejected

Despite the apparent tension between a possible PQ win and Carney's unity message, analysts do not interpret a separatist victory as a rebuke of his approach toward Trump. Carney himself remains popular in Quebec, and any rise in support for the PQ is being attributed more to provincial, internal political dynamics than to dissatisfaction with the prime minister's handling of relations with Washington.

Reporting from the Canadian capital Ottawa, France 24 correspondent Christopher Guly noted that the election result could reveal how resilient Carney's call for national unity truly is at a moment when the country is under external pressure from the United States.
