While modern routers and mesh systems deliver better performance than ever, many have a limited number of ports. Ethernet switches allow you to add multiple Ethernet connections for maximum speed, efficiency, and security.

Among the tested brands, Netgear and TP-Link stand out. The Netgear GS305 is a compact, fanless five-port Gigabit switch that is plug-and-play and very reliable. For more ports, the Netgear GS308E offers eight auto-sensing Gigabit ports and a web interface for configuring VLANs and QoS.

TP-Link provides budget-friendly options. The TL-SG108S is an eight-port Gigabit switch with a metal case and silent operation, ideal for connecting security camera hubs, NAS devices, and more. The TL-SG1008P V4 is a Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch with four PoE ports delivering up to 30W each (64W total) for cameras or access points.

When choosing a switch, consider port count – get extra ports for future expansion. Speed – most home switches are Gigabit (1 Gbps per port). Management – unmanaged switches are simple and cost-effective, while managed switches allow traffic prioritization and VLANs. PoE is essential if you need to power devices like cameras over the Ethernet cable.

Other reputable brands include Cisco, Trendnet, Zyxel, and Ubiquiti. Stick with known manufacturers to ensure reliability.
