Last week, a resident of Parka Street in Kuldīga reported that a fox had taken and killed several chickens. In recent years, wild animals like foxes and badgers have become common visitors in the town's gardens. While some residents enjoy the presence of wildlife, seeing it as a sign of a green environment, others face losses. In Veckuldīga and Putnudārzs, badgers feast on garden plants, including new shoots and flowers. Last year, a fox was caught on a home security camera in the Ventspils Street area, carrying a sneaker that the owner had left on the porch after washing. Additionally, a resident reported a fox near Māras Pond that was raising cubs and digging in her garden.

On Parka Street, neighbors help monitor the chicken coop – when they spot a fox, they alert the owner and remind her to close the coop hatch to prevent entry. This fox may be the same one moving from Parka Street to the bus station and possibly the one that was near Māras Pond last year. It searches for food in yards, and even tall fences are no obstacle if an enticing smell is present.

Zoologist Māris Lielkalns emphasizes that people must take responsibility—they should not attract animals with waste. The fox might be drawn to a compost pile or open organic waste bins, or perhaps there is a rodent in the garden. It is important to prevent the town from becoming a free buffet for wildlife, to avoid worries about lost shoes, poultry, pet safety, and disease transmission.
