Four detained in Latgale drug bust; police seize over 1.2 kg of marijuana and amphetamine

Officers from the State Police (VP) Latgale Regional Administration's Criminal Police Bureau conducted several operations in June targeting illegal drug trafficking in Augšdaugava county and Daugavpils, resulting in the detention of four individuals.

On June 16, in Naujene parish, police discovered and confiscated 130 grams of marijuana from a man born in 2005. He was immediately detained. On June 26, in Daugavpils, officers detained a man born in 1990, finding 325 grams of amphetamine, €3,484 in cash, and a gas pistol. Police have information that he was involved in drug distribution in Daugavpils.

On June 27, continuing their targeted efforts, police in Daugavpils detained two men both born in 1993. They were found with 1.115 kilograms of marijuana and €1,015 in cash. Both were placed in temporary detention.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated for the first two incidents under Section 253(1) of the Criminal Law (possession without intent to distribute), which carries a penalty of up to three years' imprisonment or other sanctions. For the third incident, proceedings were initiated under Section 253.1(2) (possession with intent to distribute, by a group), which carries a prison sentence of three to ten years, confiscation of property, and probation supervision for up to three years.

The State Police reminds that all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in accordance with law.
