Latvians and Lithuanians to gather on Mēmele bridge for Baltic Unity Day
On September 22, residents of Skaistkalne and Germaniškis will mark Baltic Unity Day for the 11th time by meeting on the Latvian-Lithuanian border bridge over the Mēmele river. The evening will continue in Germaniškis park with speeches, a symbolic bonfire and music.
On September 22 at 8 p.m., Latvians and Lithuanians from the border villages of Skaistkalne and Germaniškis will meet for the eleventh consecutive year on the bridge over the Mēmele river that marks the Latvian-Lithuanian border, continuing a tradition built to celebrate Baltic Unity Day. Organizers say friendship and good neighborly relations between the two nations carry particular weight given today's unstable geopolitical situation.
Program of the celebration
After gathering on the bridge, participants will head to the park in Germaniškis, on the Lithuanian side, where local residents and officials will deliver speeches and a symbolic Baltic bonfire will be lit. According to Kristiāna Drevinska, head of the Skaistkalne community house, the evening will feature performances by the folklore group "Vijoklis," the Kupiškis district music band "Brigadėla," the folklore ensemble "Saulala" of Biržai's "Saulė" gymnasium, and the "Skaistkalne" brass band. Guests will also be able to sample food prepared by neighbors from across the border.
Neighborly ties beyond one evening
Drevinska emphasized that the friendship between the residents of Skaistkalne and Germaniškis is not limited to this single annual gathering — the two communities regularly attend each other's events throughout the year. For both villages, Baltic Unity Day serves both as a celebration and as an occasion to reinforce the long-standing bond between Latvians and Lithuanians.
