Latvian hockey players shine in Champions League and preseason clashes at European clubs
Several Latvian hockey players posted strong performances in preseason and Champions League games for their European clubs, with Zīle helping equalize a game while shorthanded and Egle scoring on the power play.
Ahead of the Champions Hockey League season and during preseason friendlies, several Latvian national team players delivered solid performances for their European clubs.
A 28-year-old Latvian international, Zīle, contributed to his team leveling the score in the 16th minute while playing shorthanded. He spent a total of 17 minutes and 45 seconds on the ice and registered one shot on goal. His club, Liberec, will soon travel to Salzburg for a Saturday matchup against Red Bull Salzburg.
Meanwhile, defenseman Kristiāns Rubīns and his club, Pilsen's Škoda, secured a convincing 4:0 win over Sweden's Rögle of Ängelholm. Rubīns logged 15 and a half minutes of ice time and attempted two shots on goal. Pilsen's next challenge is hosting Poland's top club, GKS Tychy, which suffered a heavy 0:6 defeat in Pardubice earlier the same evening.
In preseason action, forward Haralds Egle also stood out, scoring a power-play goal in the 12th minute that helped Karlovy Vary secure a 3:0 win over Litvínov.
The games took place as part of both Champions Hockey League preparations and club preseason schedules ahead of the new European hockey season.
