New Latvian words keep emerging — test your knowledge
For over two decades, the Latvian Language Development Group of the Riga Latvian Society has run an annual survey to select the word, non-word and phrase of the year. Delfi now offers a quiz for readers to test their knowledge of recently coined Latvian words.
Every year the Latvian language gains new words created to give Latvian-based names to modern phenomena, technologies and concepts used in everyday life. This ongoing effort has been coordinated for more than 20 years by the Latvian Language Development Group of the Riga Latvian Society, working together with the Writers' Union of Latvia.
Annual word survey
These organizations hold a yearly survey to select the word of the year, the non-word of the year, and the winged phrase of the year. As part of this survey, attention is also given to various newly coined words that gradually expand the language's vocabulary.
Test your knowledge
The Delfi news portal invites readers to check how well they know these new words, asking them to explain the meaning of terms such as klausiņas, sejauts, notumse, tīkšķis and trakdancis. The quiz allows anyone to gauge their familiarity with recently created Latvian terms and to learn about the innovations taking place within the language.
