Serious and fatal workplace accidents rise in Latvia
Data from Latvia's State Labour Inspectorate show 18 people have died in workplace accidents so far this year, up to the end of September. Last year's full-year toll was 21.

The number of serious and fatal workplace accidents has increased in Latvia. This follows from preliminary figures from the State Labour Inspectorate (VDI), the body that supervises compliance with occupational safety requirements, covering the period through the end of September this year.
Fatalities
According to the VDI, 18 people have lost their lives in workplace accidents this year up to the end of September. For comparison, 21 people died in workplaces over the whole of last year. After nine months, this year's figure is already close to last year's full-year total.
Total number of accidents
In all, 205 workplace accidents have occurred this year. Of these, 171 had serious consequences. This means most of the registered accidents ended in severe injury or worse.
The figures cited are the VDI's operational data, so the full-year totals may still change once the remaining months of the year are counted.
