Drone that entered Latvian airspace turned out to be a Russian Geran

Latvia's National Armed Forces concluded that the drone that entered the country's airspace on Sunday, 1 November, was a Russian Geran. The finding rests on analysis of sensor and interceptor-drone data and consultations with Ukrainian partners.

A Russian-made Geran unmanned aerial vehicle entered Latvian airspace on Sunday, 1 November. Latvia's National Armed Forces announced this on the social network X, and the Ukrainian outlet European Pravda relayed the statement. It is the latest in a series of incidents in which unidentified drones have been recorded in the airspace of neighbouring countries.

How the drone was identified

The armed forces reached their conclusion after analysing data from sensors and interceptor drones, and after consulting Ukrainian partners. They say they tracked the aircraft's flight path and deployed an interceptor drone to respond to the threat.

The military says the experience gained in these incidents is being analysed in order to further strengthen the protection of Latvian airspace.

What happened on the evening

At 18:59 on Sunday evening, an orange alert level was declared in the Krāslava and Ludza districts after an unidentified drone violated the country's airspace. Seventeen minutes later the object left Latvian airspace, crossing the Latvian-Russian border.

Earlier cases

On 24 October, the National Armed Forces reported finding the wreckage of a drone that had crashed on Latvian territory. On 18 October, debris of a suspected drone was found in the village of Juodžionys in Lithuania's Pasvalys district; Lithuania says the drone entered its airspace from Polish territory.
