About 150 websites and digital services temporarily shut down in Latvia over a cybersecurity risk
Because of a critical cyber vulnerability, about 150 digital resources were temporarily suspended in Latvia. An LSM talk show in Russian discussed why this caused alarm in Latvia while neighbouring countries stayed calm.

About 150 digital resources in Latvia were temporarily taken offline because of a critical cybersecurity vulnerability. The affected services included information from the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD), train timetables and doctor appointment booking at the largest clinics, the Russian-language portal of Latvian public media LSM reported on 22 October.
What lies behind it
The shutdowns were prompted by a global flaw in a basic technology on which about half of the world's internet relies. Because the vulnerability is critical, part of the resources were switched off for a time.
A different reaction in neighbouring countries
In Latvia the outages caused alarm, while in neighbouring countries the situation looked extremely calm. The LSM programme "Обсудим вечером" ("Let's Discuss in the Evening") set out to find out why. In the headline of the programme's article, a specialist describes the approach taken as a zero-risk option.
