The first locally grown watermelons of the season have ripened in Latvian fields and gardens, according to LSM's programme "Obsudim večerom". The broadcast notes that this summer has been considerably kinder to Latvia's watermelon and melon growers than last year.

A growing industry

Watermelon and melon cultivation has been gaining popularity in Latvia in recent years. According to the source, the area planted with these crops has nearly doubled over the past couple of years, suggesting local farmers are increasingly confident growing produce traditionally associated with warmer climates.

Risks remain

Despite the positive trend, growers still face real challenges. Latvia's unpredictable weather can significantly affect both the size and quality of the harvest from year to year. Competition from cheap imported produce is another concern — imported watermelons and melons often appear on store shelves at lower prices than locally grown ones, making it harder for domestic growers to compete.

Still, this year's harvest points to continued growth in Latvia's watermelon-growing business.
