Latvia ends scoring drought but falls to Montenegro in dramatic clash
Latvia's national football team scored its first goal of the UEFA Nations League season but suffered a dramatic 1:2 home defeat to Montenegro. The loss leaves Latvia at the bottom of its group table.

Latvia's national football team suffered its second defeat of the UEFA Nations League campaign, losing 1:2 to Montenegro at home in its third group match. Despite the result, there was a silver lining for Latvian fans — the team finally found the net for the first time this Nations League season.
Montenegro took the lead as early as the 4th minute, when rising star Vasilije Adžič controlled a cross inside the box and fired a precise shot past goalkeeper Rihards Matrevics. Latvia responded quickly through Deniss Cirkins, whose shot from the edge of the box was saved by the opposing goalkeeper.
Throughout the first half, Latvia came close to equalizing several times, most notably in the 42nd minute when Roberts Uldriķis headed a cross from Andrejs Cigaņiks against the post. Before the break, Latvia received more bad news as captain Antonijs Černomordijs picked up a yellow card that will rule him out of the team's next match.
Early in the second half, Uldriķis had another good chance but hit the crossbar. Montenegro then doubled their lead in the 56th minute, with Adžič scoring again from an awkward angle after the ball fell to him in the box. Montenegro nearly added a third soon after, but the shot struck the post.
Latvia pulled one back in the 81st minute through Markuss Strods, who ran onto the ball following a scramble near the box and struck it confidently into the net for his first goal for the national team, making it 1:2. Despite late pressure, Latvia could not find an equalizer.
Statistics showed Latvia had slightly more possession and matched Montenegro's shot count, but Montenegro held a significant edge in expected goals. The defeat leaves Latvia in last place, fourth, in Group 2 of the standings.
