Tularemia cases on the rise in Latvia, disease spread by rodents, ticks and mosquitoes

Latvia has confirmed 17 cases of tularemia this year, with all patients currently hospitalized. The disease is spreading most notably in the Zemgale and Riga regions.

Latvia is seeing a continued rise in cases of tularemia, an infectious disease that can be transmitted to humans by animals, including rodents, as well as by ticks, mosquitoes and horseflies. The information comes from the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC).

The number of cases has been increasing since the second half of last year. So far this year, tularemia has been confirmed in 17 people, all of whom are currently receiving hospital treatment.

Regions affected

According to SPKC, the disease's spread has been most pronounced in the Zemgale and Riga regions.
